Understanding SEER Ratings
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently an air conditioner converts electricity into cooling over a typical cooling season. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit.
As of January 2023, the minimum SEER rating for new AC units in the Southeast (including North Carolina) increased from 14 to 15 SEER2. SEER2 is a slightly different testing standard, but the principle is the same: higher numbers = more efficient = lower energy bills.
SEER Rating Guide
| SEER Range | Efficiency Level | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 13-15 SEER | Standard | Budget-conscious, mild climates |
| 16-18 SEER | High Efficiency | Most Charlotte homes |
| 19-21 SEER | Very High Efficiency | Maximum savings, larger homes |
| 22+ SEER | Ultra High Efficiency | Premium comfort, variable-speed |
Higher SEER = Lower Bills
Every SEER point increase saves roughly 7% on cooling costs.
Rising Energy Costs
NC electricity prices have risen 41% since 2009 – efficiency matters more than ever.
Payback Period
High-efficiency units often pay for the upgrade cost in 5-7 years.
Better Comfort
Higher SEER units often include variable-speed technology for more even cooling.
What Affects Your Actual Savings?
Climate & Usage
- • Charlotte's humid summers mean more cooling hours
- • Your thermostat settings (68°F vs 74°F makes a big difference)
- • How often you're home during the day
Home Factors
- • Square footage and ceiling height
- • Insulation quality and air sealing
- • Window efficiency and sun exposure
System Factors
- • Proper sizing (too big wastes energy too!)
- • Quality of installation
- • Ductwork condition and sealing
Maintenance
- • Regular filter changes
- • Annual tune-ups maintain efficiency
- • Clean coils and proper refrigerant levels
