Warning Signs
Signs You Need AC Installation
Don't ignore these warning signs. Early diagnosis can prevent costly repairs.
AC Over 15 Years Old
AC systems typically last 12-15 years. If yours is older, a new energy-efficient system will save money on bills.
Frequent Repairs
If you're calling for repairs multiple times per year, it's more cost-effective to replace the system.
Uneven Cooling
If some rooms are too hot or cold, your system may be improperly sized or failing.
High Energy Bills
Older, inefficient systems cost significantly more to operate than modern high-efficiency units.
Using R-22 Refrigerant
If your AC uses R-22 (Freon), it's outdated. New systems use more efficient, environmentally friendly refrigerants.
Experiencing Any of These Issues?
Don't wait for a complete breakdown. Early diagnosis can save you hundreds in repairs.
About Our AC Installation in Charlotte
When Charlotte temperatures push past 95° with humidity to match, your air conditioning system is the only thing between your family and real discomfort. Whether your current AC has reached the end of its lifespan or you are building a new home, choosing the right replacement system and installer matters. Kodiak Heating and Cooling provides complete AC installation and replacement services across Charlotte and Union County. We handle the full process — helping you select a properly sized system for your home, coordinating permits with Union and Mecklenburg County, and installing your new equipment to manufacturer specifications. Our installations include systems from Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, and other major brands. We are not a one-brand shop, which means we recommend the system that fits your home and budget rather than pushing whatever earns us the highest margin.
Replacing an air conditioner is one of the largest investments a homeowner makes, and the Charlotte market has no shortage of companies willing to sell you one. What separates a good installation from a bad one is not the equipment — most major brands build reliable systems. The difference is in the sizing calculation, the ductwork evaluation, the refrigerant charge, and the quality of the installation itself. An oversized system short-cycles, wastes energy, and fails to dehumidify. An undersized system runs constantly and never reaches the set temperature. A properly sized system installed by experienced technicians runs efficiently, keeps humidity in check, and lasts 15-20 years.
Every Kodiak installation starts with a Manual J load calculation — the industry-standard method for determining exactly how many BTUs your home needs. We factor in your home's square footage, insulation levels, window count and orientation, duct condition, and even the number of people living in the home. From there, we help you choose between system types — standard central AC, heat pump, or ductless mini-split — based on your home's infrastructure and your comfort priorities.
Our installations are not subcontracted. The same Kodiak technicians who sized your system are the ones installing it. We pull all required permits, schedule inspections, and handle warranty registration. Most residential AC installations are completed in a single day, and we test the system through a full operating cycle before we leave. Financing is available through Wells Fargo with approved credit, starting at $45 per month.

SYSTEM SELECTION
Choosing the Right AC System for Your Charlotte Home
Not every system fits every home. Here is how to narrow your options.
Charlotte's combination of high heat and high humidity creates unique demands on air conditioning systems. A system that works well in dry Arizona heat may struggle to manage moisture in a Union County summer. When selecting a new AC, the three most important factors are system type, efficiency rating, and proper sizing — in that order.
The three most common residential cooling systems in the Charlotte area are central air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless mini-splits. Each has specific advantages depending on your home.
Central Air Conditioners
The most common system in Charlotte homes built after 1980. Uses existing ductwork to distribute cooled air throughout the house. Best for homes with ductwork in good condition. Paired with a gas furnace for heating, this is the traditional setup in most Union County subdivisions.
Heat Pumps
Provide both heating and cooling from a single outdoor unit. Ideal for Charlotte's mild winters — they heat efficiently down to about 35°F, which covers most of our winter. Eliminate the need for a separate furnace in many homes and can reduce heating costs by 30-50% compared to gas or electric resistance heat. Learn more about heat pump installation.
Ductless Mini-Splits
Perfect for homes without ductwork, room additions, converted garages, or bonus rooms that existing ductwork does not reach. Each indoor unit controls its own zone independently. Higher per-unit cost but zero duct loss means more efficient cooling where installed. Learn about mini-split installation.
SEER2 Efficiency Ratings
As of January 2023, all new AC systems sold in the US use the SEER2 rating standard. The minimum efficiency for our region (Southeast) is 15 SEER2. Higher-efficiency systems (18-22 SEER2) cost more upfront but use significantly less electricity. For a typical Charlotte home running AC 6-7 months per year, the difference between a 15 SEER2 and 20 SEER2 system can be $300-500 annually in energy savings.
Variable-Speed vs Single-Stage
Single-stage compressors run at full blast or not at all. Two-stage systems have a high and low setting. Variable-speed (inverter-driven) compressors adjust continuously to match demand. Variable-speed systems provide better humidity control, quieter operation, and more even temperatures — all significant benefits in Charlotte summers. They cost more but many homeowners find the comfort difference worth the investment.
YOUR INSTALLATION
What to Expect on AC Installation Day
Most residential installations are completed in a single day.
A Kodiak AC installation is a structured process, not a rush job. Whether we are replacing an existing system or installing new equipment in a home that has never had central air, here is what to expect from start to finish.
Before installation day, your Kodiak comfort advisor will have completed a Manual J load calculation, reviewed your existing ductwork, and helped you select the right equipment. You will have received a written quote with no hidden fees. On installation day, our team arrives at the scheduled time with all equipment and materials loaded.
The crew begins by protecting your floors and walls with drop cloths and shoe covers. The old equipment is disconnected and removed. New equipment is positioned according to manufacturer specifications — proper clearances, level mounting pads for outdoor units, and secure connections for indoor equipment. Refrigerant lines are brazed (not flared, which is a common shortcut that leads to leaks), electrical connections are made to code, and the condensate drain is routed properly.
After installation, we perform a complete system startup and commissioning process. This includes verifying refrigerant charge by measuring superheat and subcooling, checking airflow across the evaporator, testing all safety controls, calibrating the thermostat, and running the system through a full cooling cycle. We do not leave until your new system is producing cold air and operating within manufacturer specifications.
Finally, we register your equipment warranty, review the system operation with you, schedule your first maintenance appointment, and haul away all old equipment and packaging. Permits and inspections are handled by Kodiak — you do not need to coordinate anything with the county.
BRANDS & EQUIPMENT
AC Brands We Install in Charlotte
Kodiak installs and services equipment from every major residential AC manufacturer. We are not locked into a single brand, which means we recommend the system that best fits your home and budget — not the one that pays us the highest dealer incentive. The brands most commonly installed in Charlotte-area homes include Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant, York, Amana, and Daikin. Each manufacturer offers systems across the efficiency spectrum from base models to premium variable-speed equipment. See our full brand lineup.
When helping you select a brand, we consider your priorities. If long-term reliability and resale value matter most, Trane and Carrier have the strongest track records in our area. If upfront cost is the primary concern, Goodman and Amana offer solid performance at lower price points with good warranty coverage. For maximum efficiency and whisper-quiet operation, Lennox and Daikin variable-speed systems are hard to beat. We install whatever you choose and stand behind the work with our own labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's equipment warranty.

Common Questions
AC Installation FAQ
Everything Charlotte homeowners need to know about ac installation
How much does a new AC cost in Charlotte?
AC installation in Charlotte typically costs $3,500-$7,500 for a complete system including equipment, labor, and permits. Learn more about AC installation costs in Charlotte. Exact pricing depends on system size, SEER rating, and your home's specific needs. Financing starts at $45/month.
What size AC do I need for my Charlotte home?
Proper AC sizing is critical. Charlotte homes typically need 1 ton of cooling per 500-600 square feet, but this varies based on insulation, windows, ceiling height, and sun exposure. We perform a Manual J load calculation during your free consultation to ensure perfect sizing—not guesswork like some companies use.
How long does AC installation take?
Most AC installations in Charlotte take 6-10 hours (one full day). This includes removing your old system, installing the new unit, making any necessary modifications, testing, and cleanup. More complex installations with ductwork modifications or electrical upgrades may take 2 days.
What's a good SEER rating for Charlotte's climate?
For Charlotte's hot, humid summers, we recommend at least 16 SEER for a good balance of efficiency and affordability. Higher SEER (18-20+) systems cost more upfront but save 20-30% on cooling bills. We'll help you calculate your payback period to make the best financial decision.
Do I need to replace my furnace when I replace my AC?
Not always, but often it makes sense. If your furnace is over 10 years old or incompatible with your new AC, replacing both saves money vs. two separate jobs. Learn about furnace installation options. We'll provide honest recommendations—no pressure to buy more than you need.
What brands of AC do you install?
We install all major brands including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Bryant, and American Standard. As a family-owned company, we recommend systems based on your needs and budget, not which brand pays us the highest commission like investor-backed companies.
Are there rebates or tax credits for new AC in North Carolina?
Yes! High-efficiency AC systems (16+ SEER) may qualify for Duke Energy rebates up to $450 and federal tax credits up to $300. We'll help you identify all available incentives and handle the paperwork. These rebates can offset 10-15% of your installation cost.
Do you handle permits and inspections?
Yes! We pull all necessary permits and handle inspections for AC installations in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. This is included in our pricing—no surprises. Some companies skip permits to save money, but that can void warranties and create liability issues.
How long will my new AC last?
A properly installed and maintained AC in Charlotte should last 12-18 years. Regular maintenance (we offer plans starting at $240/year) can extend this to 20+ years. Cheap installations or improper sizing can reduce lifespan to 8-10 years—why we focus on quality.
What's the difference between single-stage and variable-speed AC?
Single-stage ACs run at 100% or off—simple and affordable. Variable-speed ACs adjust output for better efficiency, humidity control, and comfort. In Charlotte's humid climate, variable-speed performs better but costs $1,000-$2,000 more. We'll explain pros/cons based on your budget.
Do you offer financing for AC installation?
Yes! We offer flexible financing through Wells Fargo with options as low as $45/month for qualified buyers. We believe Charlotte families shouldn't have to suffer through summer heat due to upfront costs. Transparent terms, no hidden fees.
What warranty comes with a new AC?
We provide a 2-year labor warranty and 10-year equipment warranty on all AC installations. We register all warranties and provide lifetime service support—we'll be here when you need us.
Can you install an AC if I have an old furnace?
Usually yes, but we'll need to verify compatibility during our free consultation. If your furnace is over 15 years old, we may recommend replacing both for better efficiency. Learn about our replacement calculator to see your options. Always your choice—no pressure.
What makes your installation better than big chain companies?
We're family-owned since 2008, not a franchise. Learn why Kodiak is different. Our installers are experienced (not subcontractors), background-checked, and paid hourly (not commission). This means proper load calculations, quality installation, and honest recommendations.
Do you remove and dispose of my old AC?
Yes! Complete removal and environmentally responsible disposal of your old system is included in our installation price. We'll also haul away any old ductwork or equipment being replaced. Check our customer reviews to see why Charlotte trusts us.
